I know there are tons of posts out there on this, but I was wondering
if anyone had any more up to date advice... also, my problem is a
little more complicated than "my battery doesn't last long enough".

I've had a 6Gb iPod mini for about a year and a half, and I'm having
battery problems. The battery seems to discharge quite quickly when
it's not being used (2 or 3 days, sometimes), but more importantly,
the battery display and the amount of battery power left seems to get
out of synch. I've had it showing battery power on the indicator in
the corner, and yet it shuts off saying the battery is flat; at other
times, the indicator shows it's flat, but it will keep playing for
hours. And sometimes when it switches off, if I leave it half an hour
or so and try again, it'll play quite happily.

It seems to be getting worse, because it was on charge most of the day
today and it just kept charging; it never indicated that it was
finished charging. And yet, when I switch it on, it says that the
there is no battery power remaining.

Any ideas of anything I can try to get it sorted out? Or does the
battery need to be replaced? (Not that I'm happy to replace it - I
don't use it terribly much, and I really think that a product where
the battery only lasts 1.5 years is not a terribly high quality
product - so I'm hoping there's something I can do to get it right).

If as you say it's getting out of sync the first thing I'd try is a
"Restore".

You're not leaving it plugged in to a switched off charger/'puter are you?

Consider my tale of woe.

I have (had) a 30G iPod video. After 17 months the battery just didn't cut
it anymore. Not wanting to pay 70 bucks or whatever to Apple to get a
refurbished 'pod, I paid 20 bucks to Sonnettech for a battery replacement
kit.

Big mistake. The thing proved far more difficult to open up than the one the
guy on the Sonnettech video guide used. The cheap plastic opening tool
eventually broke. Finally I got it off, and was ready to plug the new
battery when when I noticed that the tiny plastic connector that the battery
ribbon was spozed to go into had BROKEN OFF.

So now I have a $300 dollar piece of cyberjunk.

This has really soured me on Apple, I tell you. I like iTunes and I like my
Mac, and I loved my 'pod. But unless they start putting replaceable
batteries in them, I'll never buy an iPod again.

The problem is, I still want an MP3 player. Creative makes good ones with
replaceable batteries, but they're totally Windows-driven--even their damn
manuals are Windows programs. I have a Creative Nano Plus, and it's a cool
little device, but useless for creating playlists for jogging, which is
mostly what I used my 'pod for. I don't need a subscription service; I
already have thousands of songs on my iTunes. Does anyone know if the
larger, more expensive Creative models are more Mac/iTunes-friendly?

Tell it to Mr. Jobs. In the mean time, I'll keep enjoying my Sansa with its
replaceable rechargeable 20 hour battery. Of course not being an iSheep, I
really don't care if it talks to iTunes or not. Anything that I do end up
downloading from iTunes, I end up burning onto a CD, then ripping it as an
MP3 to load onto the Sansa.

So true... except I would *never* download from iTunes. You can download DRM
free music from payplay.fm for $0.88 a song. The preview player is the best
on the Web that I've come across so far. I'm not fond of their method of
pre-paying on an account but we'll see how that works out. Soon Amazon.com
will be offering DRM free music as well.

But, in the meantime, my Sansa e280 loves it!

When will the Mac boys ever learn, nobody owns a Mac... it owns them.

Normally I wouldn't use iTunes either, except someone gave me a $50 iTunes

gift card for Christmas.... Wasn't impressed with the experience either.
