On the SanDisk Sansa M230 512MB mp3 player, can files be deleted
through Windows Explorer rather than Windows Media Player? The
instruction manual says to delete music files use software tools like
Windows Media Player or Rhapsody. It doesn't say whether they can be
deleted through Windows Explorer. |

In msc mode definitely yes, in mtp mode I'm almost sure the answer is
still yes, but haven't used that mode for quite a while. Just try it.

I was kind of hoping to find out before I buy it. I did some further
research and it looks like I can use Windows Explorer, but I would
like to confirm that. |

Is there not an M230 manual on the Sansa website? I got one for my
Sansa e260 from there. In MSC mode I can use any file manager
(Explorer or ZtreeWin in my case) in Windows XP to transfer files
to/from my e260. |

I already stated in my original post that the instruction manual says
to delete music files by using software tools like Windows Media
Player or Rhapsody. That's all it says. But that doesn't necessarily
mean that's the only way to delete files. That's why I'm asking about
it here. |

One thing to keep in mind about the Sansa "M" series players. I bought 4 |
of the M240's for my family. 2 of these died within 6 months. Before I'd
buy a M230, I'd check out a Creative Zen Nano Plus. I've had one of
these for a year and the only problem has been with the battery cover.
It's been through many rainstorms and a season of snowboarding with no
problems. I know this player requires no proprietary software tools.
Neither does the Sansa for that matter. As previously mentioned, the
Sansa only has to be set in the MSC mode. I don't ever remember having
to change the setting with the Creative. I seem to remember the Sansa
having some crazy file sorting issues too. |

This appears on the Sandisk site you about the M200 series:
http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1306
"""Transferring Music
To transfer music from your computer to your player:
Use the USB connector cable provided with your player to connect the
USB port on your player to an open USB port on your computer. The
player will appear as a Windows Portable Device on your computer.
Drag and drop music files to the player from any location on your
hard-drive or use a variety of music software to move licensed music
to your Sansa. For more information on how to use specific software,
please refer to the help files provided with each program."""
Although it doesn't explicitly say so, the way to delete files is to
use the same technique that you use to add files but in addition I'd
recommend deleting the index file afterwards as well before
disconnecting and allowing it to reboot to make sure the player's file
system is updated. Since connection via MSC/USB brings the player
up as a portable drive in Windows, any file manager will do this.
I suggest all that crap about Rhapsody and WMP is for the dorks. |
