How long do mp3 players generally last on one AAA NiMH battery? The
player I'm interested in says it can last up to 19 hours on one AAA
alkaline battery. So I'm wondering how long one AAA NiMH battery would
last.

And, is it usually safe to use a NiMH battery with an mp3 player if
the instruction manual doesn't mention them?

It's hard to say because a lot depends on how the mp3 player was
designed. But guessing from the "19 hours" (which is pretty good),
probably a similar number of hours. NiMH cells tend to do much
better with devices that are power hogs, so if a device lasted 4 or
5 hours using alkalines, I'd guess that NiMH cells might last at
least 7 hours, maybe more.

It should be safe.

It depends on a number of things; age, quality of battery, capacity of
battery etc. But the advantage of AAAs is that it's easy to carry a spare.

Should be.
