I would like an mp3 player that will simply copy file names and folders from
my computer and let me SEE the same file structure on the player. Then I can
find the file I want and play it without reference to Artist, Album or any
other "playlist" monkey business.

Does such a thing exist?

Also, it would be really nice to find a player that uses CF or SD cards as
memory so I could have more music available for a single player.

Again -- any such thing?

Thanks

I bought a cheap mp3 player a couple of years ago and it sucked for
the same reason. I just want to be able to make folders the same way I
do on my PC. Why is that so hard?

My 30G iPod does that using GTKpod/Ubuntu.

My son put Linux on his 30G iPod.
Uses it like a palm pilot sometimes.

It isn't hard but it's not what they want you to do with your MP3
player. They want you to sign-up to sites like iTunes and pay money
to d/l MP3s.

It isn't hard but it's not what they want you to do with your MP3
player. They want you to sign-up to sites like iTunes and pay money
to d/l MP3s.

They could still do that with a generic "folder/file" system.

I think they are trying to make it easier on the user. They think that
most people don't understand that an mp3 song is merely a file within
a folder. I noticed the same thing with digital cameras. They don't
think you are "sophisticated" enought to drag some jpgs from a folder
in your camera to a folder on your pc's harddrive. Instead they hide
what is really happening and they use terms like "photo album", etc. I
bought a camera last year and I could not figure out where the dang
jpg files were located. I had to return it.

But I think they are wrong. I think most people are accustomed to
files and folders, especially since they already have a PC in both of
these examples (cameras and mp3 players). They're just making it more
complicated by introducing new concepts.

I don't disagree with that but ISTM that what lies behind this
deliberate complication of MP3 players is to force you down the path
of using the machine in the way they want, hence their use of
proprietary software. In the case of iPods they want you to sign-up
to iTunes to buy music which is then splattered with DRM.

My own digital camera connects to a USB port and I can simply d/l
any or all of the jpg pix onto my PC using the XP camera wizard but
I'd prefer it to pop up as a removable drive like my Sansa MP3 player
does.

Sandisk and MS are now teaming up to seize control of flash drives
which people have been using happily for some time to carry portable
apps around in their pocket. MS now want to add this same sort of
complication and DRM to them too; again so they can have some control
over what you do use flash drives for.

See: http://swik.net/Microsoft
....and...

Naturally, this backwards step is described as "a whole new level of
customer benefit" as if we are all idiots.

I can 'sort of' do what the OP wants (just load files into the thing) with a
Creative Zen Photo Sleek (or is it Sleek Photo, I never remember)-- but it
isn't exactly easy. The Creative software calls it 'Synchronizing' (WTH
would be wrong in calling it something easy like 'download' or "transfer" or
just 'load from PC' -- but it wants you to have MS Outlook installed, which
I don't, so you have to go thru that each time, but ultimately you can load
just mp3 files into it. Bad part, tho, ( and why I am looking at this NG for
the first time, looking for a player that would suit me better) is that I
find it a nuisance to dial up the file I want to hear while I'm, say, on the
gym treadmill, which is where I use it most. I have all my files set up not
in folders, but as individual files with Composer - Name of Piece -
Movement.mp3, which is very convenient for playing on the PC at home using
WinAmp, but the writing on the Zen's screen is a little small, and the
slider thinggy used for selecting is something I just can't get used to, so
selection On The Hoof is not easy--finally resorted to using shuffle mode.
Seems like the unit is set up (as others have said earlier in this thread)
for downloading toonz for $, and it expects everything to be arranged in
folders.
I see that the Zune has a really big screen, but (according to at least
one review) this is taken up with 'album art', which doesn't apply to me,
and so I wonder if there would be a great big blank spot on my screen, and
little tiny print for my file names?

The Frontier Labs NeXIII will meet your requirements and uses an SD card.

The Frontier Labs NeXIa will meet your requirements and uses a CF card.

You can find them on eaby or at

www.mydigitaldiscount.com

The Cowan Iaudio U2 will meet your requirements, but uses only internal
memory. It is available through Amazon or from the manufacture's online
store at

http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/iaudio/u2/

The NexIII and U2 both have a normal USB connector and will show up on your
computer as a regular removable disk drive without any additional software
installed. You can then drag folders and files to the removable drive.
The same folder/file structure is then visible on the player. The NeXIa
requires driver software on the host computer, but if you instead write
directly to the CF card, it is not needed.
